How to Help Your Dog and Your Child Feel Comfortable During Your Brisbane Photo Session
When your child is neurodiverse and your dog has a big personality, getting family photos done can feel like a lot.
But with a bit of preparation and a relaxed, understanding approach we can make it something your whole crew actually enjoys.
I’ve worked with plenty of families who arrive a little nervous, wondering how it’s all going to go. But by the end of the session, they’re surprised at how calm and easy it felt. That’s not by accident it’s all in how we plan and adapt.
Here’s how we help everyone feel safe, relaxed, and ready to just be themselves:
Before the Session
Get familiar
If your child feels more comfortable knowing what to expect, I’m happy to send a short video or a few photos of me so I’m not a stranger on the day. We can also talk about any sensory needs or routines your child relies on.
Talk it through
Let your child know what’s happening in the days leading up. Keep it simple: “We’re meeting a photographer in the park. He’s really relaxed. You can bring your toy/stim/fidget. We’ll go for a walk, and there might be some photos while we play.”
Pack your go-to comforts
Bring snacks, water, their favourite toy, and anything else that helps your child feel grounded. Same goes for your dog treats, leash, poo bags, a toy if they’re into it.
Time it well
We’ll chat ahead of time about what time of day works best for your child and your dog. Some kids do better in the morning, others in the afternoon. I’m happy to work around your family’s rhythm.
On the Day
Let your child and dog lead
There’s no pressure to pose or perform. If your child needs space, they’ll have it. If your dog needs to run before settling, we’ll give them a chance. The session flows with you—not the other way around.
We go slow, or fast, or pause when needed
I allow extra time so there’s no rush. We can take breaks, let your child reset, give your dog a breather whatever feels right. I’ve found that the best moments often come just after a quiet reset or an unexpected giggle.
Trust your instincts
You know your family best. If something’s not working, tell me, we’ll adapt. If your child needs a change of scenery or your dog is overstimulated, we’ll adjust. Nothing phases me.
After the Session
No need to stress about the results
Even if it felt a little chaotic, I promise we captured something real and beautiful. The photos you’ll love most won’t be the perfect poses—they’ll be the moments that feel like your family.
Brisbane families often tell me, “We didn’t think it would work—but it did.”
With patience, empathy, and a bit of playful chaos, we’ll create images that show your people (and pups) exactly as they are—loved, safe, and completely themselves.
