Don’t Worry, We’ve Got You: What to Expect in a Pet-Friendly Photo Shoot for Your Neurodiverse Child and Their Best mate.

One of the biggest things I hear from Brisbane families with neurodiverse kids is: “We’ve never done this before—what actually happens on the day?”

It’s a fair question. Especially when you’ve got a child who experiences the world a little differently, and a dog who’s… well, doing their own thing.

So here’s a little behind-the-scenes look at how a session with me works—and how we support every family member, two-legged and four.

First, We Talk

Before the session, we’ll jump on a relaxed call to chat about your family. I’ll ask a few simple questions:

  • What helps your child feel safe?

  • Are there sensory sensitivities I should know about?

  • How does your dog typically behave in new places?

  • What type of family are you? Fun, serious, relaxed, adventurous etc

This helps me shape the session around your family’s needs not the other way around.

Then, We Choose the Right Spot

We’re lucky in Brisbane to have so many beautiful outdoor locations. I’ll suggest a quiet, open space that’s dog-friendly and not overwhelming for kids who might need room to move or less sensory input.

Think shade, space, and somewhere that feels like a breath of fresh air—not a production.

On the Day: It’s Chill. Really.

When we meet, I’ll take a few minutes just to connect with your child, your dog, and with you. No rush. No pressure.

If your child needs time to warm up, we give them that time. If your dog needs to run in circles before settling, great I’ll photograph that too.

We follow their lead.

I’ll guide gently when needed, but mostly I’m just there to observe and capture your family as you naturally are laughing, exploring, snuggling, sometimes even hiding behind trees (yes, that’s happened!).

And After? You’ll Be Surprised What We Captured

Even if it felt like no one sat still for a second, I promise there will be moments. Real ones. Ones that make you smile every time you walk past them on your wall.

Because it’s not about control. It’s about connection.

So if the thought of a photo session has felt overwhelming, just know— You’re not expected to make it perfect. You’re not expected to ‘get it right.’

You just need to show up.

I’ll take it from there.
