From Overwhelmed to Overjoyed: One Brisbane Family’s Journey to Portraits They’ll Treasure Forever
I want to tell you a story about one of the families I’ve had the privilege to photograph.
They reached out to me after putting off family photos for years. Their son is autistic, and their dog is the kind that bolts at butterflies. They’d had a rough experience with a photographer in the past—lots of pressure, no flexibility—and they left feeling like they’d failed.
When we first spoke, the mum told me, “We’d love photos… but I honestly don’t know if it’s possible for us.”
So, we took a different approach.
The Plan: Go Slow, Stay Open
I suggested a quiet park where we’d have space to roam without distractions. No expectations, no timelines. Just a walk with their family, camera in hand.
Their son brought a toy he felt safe with. The dog came with treats and a long lead. We let things unfold naturally.
There were no poses. No “look at the camera!” moments. Just connection. A cuddle on the grass. A belly laugh. A proud moment when their son looked through the camera viewfinder and took a photo of his dog.
The Result: Something Real
When we had their zoom purchasing appointment where they can view their photos, the energy was completely different.
Tears. Smiles. Laughter.
The mum said, “This is the first time I’ve seen a photo that feels like us.”
They chose a piece for their living room wall one where everyone’s connected in their own way, the dog’s tongue is out, and their son is glowing with pride.
It’s not ‘perfect’ in the traditional sense. It’s perfect because it’s real.
Why I’m Sharing This
If you’ve ever felt like a family photo session might be too hard… or like your story doesn’t fit the mould… I want you to know you’re not alone.
And I promise it is possible.
With patience, flexibility, and understanding, we can create something your family will treasure forever. Something that tells your story honestly.
Because that’s what you deserve.
Disclosure: Some families don’t like the world seeing their photos and some are super proud. I respect their wishes
