Do Dogs Really Need Jackets in Winter?
As Brisbane mornings get colder, it's common to see dogs out and about wearing jackets, jumpers, and coats. But do dogs actually need them, or are they just a fashion statement?
A recent article by Daniel Johnson for ABC News Australia explored this question with the help of animal welfare experts, and the answer is: it depends on the dog.
Just like people, some dogs feel the cold more than others. Small breeds, older dogs, dogs with short coats, and dogs carrying very little body fat can struggle to stay warm during winter. Breeds such as Greyhounds, Chihuahuas, Pugs, French Bulldogs, and Toy Poodles may genuinely benefit from wearing a jacket when temperatures drop.
On the other hand, many larger breeds with thick double coats, such as Golden Retrievers, Border Collies, German Shepherds, and Huskies, are naturally insulated and often cope well without extra clothing.
The best way to know if your dog needs a jacket is to watch their behaviour. Signs that your dog may be feeling the cold include:
• Shivering
• Seeking out warm spots or heaters
• Reluctance to go outside
• Curling up tightly when resting
It's also important to remember that every dog is different. Some dogs love the comfort of a jacket, while others would rather go without. If your dog seems uncomfortable or restricted, don't force them to wear one.
The article also highlights that good shelter, warm bedding, and protection from wind and rain are often more important than clothing, especially for dogs spending time outdoors.
As dog photographers, we spend a lot of time outdoors with dogs of all breeds and ages. One thing we've noticed is that older dogs and short-coated breeds often appreciate a little extra warmth on chilly winter mornings, while many thick-coated dogs are perfectly happy as they are.
The takeaway? Dog jackets aren't just about looking cute. For some dogs, they can make winter much more comfortable. The key is understanding your individual dog's needs and paying attention to what they're telling you.
